Washington Park Racetrack started out as the Washington Park Trotting Club located between South Park (now Martin Luther King Dive) & South Cottage Grove Avenues at East 61st Street (see the Washington Park Trotting Club page for complete historical details). This new race track opened in 1926 and was a very popular venue and attraction. On August 31, 1955, Washington Park hosted a match race between Nashua and Swaps with a distance of a mile and a quarter. The purse was $100,000.00. Nashua won by several lengths, having led the entire race. The race was well attended, and attracted reporters from across the country. Nashua went on to be named Horse of the Year for 1955.[1]
