History Dept.INGALLS PARK opened in 1894 as the pride and joy of Joliet businessman L.E. Ingalls. His accomplishments as a businessman and entrepreneur were many and impressive! Besides owning Ingalls Park he also owned the Hotel Del Prado in Chicago that was built in 1891 for the 1893 Columbian Exhibition. Ingalls also was instrumental in providing electrical power to Joliet (Economy Light & Power Co.) and owning a large dairy operation (Richmond-Smith Co.).The racetrack was a mile oval and seemed to be, by all accounts, a very fast track with very fine accoutrements. Published articles, see "Joliet's Summer Meeting" below, state that the track was 'sod' and the only of its kind in the state. The last known year of racing took place in 1911.Memory Lane.
